New phase, new kitchen
After returning from a stint overseas and coming to the end of a 47-year career, Garry and his wife, Christina, decided that it was time for them both to prepare for the next phase in life.
They realised the 1939 brick and tile home they were living in was not really serving their lifestyle anymore, and it was time for a change so that their place could be more open, flow a lot easier, and be a great space for entertaining.
Christina had always envisioned a specific kitchen but it was never really a priority until their decision to remodel their entire home. Along the process of moving walls and transforming a four-bedroom home into a two-bedroom home with an office and bigger bathrooms, the new kitchen finally had the opportunity to come to fruition.
Garry worked with Architect Hamish from WatGunLow, to establish more technical designs for the space and draw up some snazzy concepts. Once their ideas were put on paper, Hamish finalised the kitchen proposal and recommended Garry speak with the team at Cutshop® Mt Wellington, to bring the ideas to life.
Having identified the furniture that would be needed in the space and where drawers and cabinets would be situated, Garry and our very own Karl Ross discussed the project in more detail. Garry calls himself a ‘glorified handyman’ and looked forward to physically putting everything together once it was made.
The front of the main unit had beveled plied pulls - which means no handles and sloping edges - and it was this particular design idea that made this kitchen stand out. The whole process from start to finish ran super smoothly, and Garry credits Karl in his contribution to the wonderful outcomes.
Garry was also impressed at the extent to which the team went in order to meet every detail with equal care. Finding matching colours for the edges of the drawers was quite a complex process but a key part of the design. Innovative thinking saved the day!
After unsuccessful attempts at finding the right kind of edging, Karl sawed off some of the laminate from the excess Scandinavian plywood used in the main manufacturing process, using the trimmings to then stick onto the edges, for continuity.
If you’ve got an idea for a project that’s been dormant for too long, Cutshop® is here to help you materialise it!
