Room With A View

Rest, relaxation and rejuvenation are what I imagine everyone wants when they walk in through the front door after a long day, in a home that is not only the social hub of the family but also the perfect space to unwind.

The brief to Kitchen Designers, Peter and Rachael Hill, from Citywide Kitchens was to work along with the architect, who was also the client's daughter, to create a home that not only looked super stylish, provided exact functionality, but created a connection with the environment outside.

The project required precise cabinetry which is why Rachael and Peter came to Cutshop® North Shore, their manufacturing partners for the past three years, to cut and edge all the cabinetry for the kitchen, scullery, bathroom, walk-in-wardrobe and living room cabinetry.

Set on a hillside in Waipu Cove, the kitchen overlooks sweeping views of the ocean from Whangarei Heads down to the Bream Tail. The architect chose clean white profile doors and panels which reflect the natural light making the space feel large, light and airy.

Timber was used to compliment the trees outside and the blue tiles bring the ocean inside. As the heart of the home, the kitchen island is one of the main features in the room and getting it right takes some extra thought.

Kitchen designer Rachael Hill knows that planning is integral to a good kitchen island, taking into consideration its primary use, how many seats it will need, proximity to appliances and overall balance to other elements in the kitchen.

It is also important to think about whether you want electrical outlets to be integrated into the Island as this must be planned prior to installation.

The architect uses the same timber and style running through all cabinetry within the house unifying the theme, which can be seen in the bathroom with the floating vanities in both the main family bathroom and ensuite, as well as the bespoke walk-in-wardrobe.

For Rachael and Peter, seeing a project progress always has its stand out moments. Even if it’s nervously holding your breath as you drive a fully laden flatbed truck sideways along a hillside, however, the most significant moment is always the reveal!

The finished look was outstanding and the clients were over the moon with the professionalism, workmanship and attention to detail from everyone involved.

Working with Cutshop® is always easy, efficient and super friendly, plus it arrives at our factory.

For this project, Rachael and Peter used their knowledge and skill to support the architect's design which is a stunning example of a simplistic style that runs throughout the home.

By using Cutshop® for all cabinetry cutting and edging, Rachael and Peter were able to focus on the architect and client safely in the knowledge that the ‘factory in their back pocket’ was making sure everything was perfectly cut exactly as they wanted it.

Whether working with a kitchen designer or architect to renovate a home, or designing everything yourself, Cutshop® can provide affordable cabinetry with precision cutting and offers expert knowledge and skill to ensure a stress-free home renovation for any room of the house.

Tips for kitchen renovation design

Thinking of renovating your home or planning a new build?

Rachael Hill from Citywide kitchen offers her tips for a smooth kitchen renovation:

PLAN - renovating a kitchen is NOT a fast overnight project.

BE REALISTIC - the journey from planning your kitchen to the final reveal takes at least 10 weeks. The process including entrusting a professional, finalising a design, organizing trades and getting through manufacture.

EDUCATE - educate yourself on different products. If products seem similar but value significantly in cost, there is always a reason. Seek those with a lifetime hardware warranty.

CHOOSE SOMEONE QUALIFIED - working with a professional can be an absolute asset. They know the ins and outs, they understand what can be achieved, have extensive knowledge about the range of products available and will think about things that you didn’t know to think about.

RELAX - and finally, enjoy the process. You may feel like your camping whilst the kitchen is constructed but at least you’re inside and warm.
