Ideas for a killer kitchen island

There are countless clever ways in which kitchen design can be the epitome of style and function. The star of the show is more often than not, the kitchen island. The centre piece, the focal point, the hub of the room, the kitchen island is nothing less than an asset to the room.

For those that have the space to accommodate one, what are the essentials that shouldn’t be overlooked when planning for that all important workhorse? The kitchen island quite often is needed to be a combination of three things - a sitting area for friends and family to gather eat, drink and chat, a food preparation area, and/or a cleaning area.

Here are a few of our favourites, designed by clients who all hit that perfect note of clever and practical design.

A kitchen island that allows a blank canvas for easy, uninterrupted food preparation or simply sitting down and enjoying a glass of wine over a delicious dinner. With no sink or cooking hob obstructing the aesthetics of the kitchen, ensuring a stream lined and larger than life space.

Double aspect with storage facing the interior of the kitchen space and chairs that can be situated under the bench top which overhangs on two sides. This kitchen island that steals the show with its simplicity and elegant style, beautiful contrasting cabinetry and a lighter stone bench-top.

A kitchen island to go.

For Rhys Mellor, kitchen designer and creator of Love kitchens NZ, there is nothing short of brilliant in this kitchen island design. The central piece of the room, the island has been designed on wheels, making it a flexible and moveable piece of furniture.

With space of storage on one side, the other accommodates the stools enabling it to be one piece of perfectly transient and stylish furniture. Designed with a contrasting black and timber look material with exposed edging that is perfectly complimented by the stools, this kitchen island has its own identity within the room.

Integrated dishwashers.

Make the most out the kitchen island space and incorporate the dishwasher and the kitchen sink. It may seem tricky when dealing with a kitchen renovation by moving the plumbing, and yet that little bit of extra work could make your kitchen an absolute dream to be in.

By separating the cooking and cleaning areas, you will be creating space around the appliances ensuring that you don’t feel overcrowded and even better, if someone is cooking then someone else can be doing the dishes without getting in each others way.

This kitchen Island by Totalspace Interiors is a beautiful combination of a light timber, with interesting and stylish cut-out side panelling, and beautiful stone bench-top.

For Matt Chernishov, Director and Project Manager of Treun Project Management, he designed a black kitchen with seamless cabinetry that included a streamlined dishwasher and sink integrated into the kitchen island. Stunning cabinetry that looks incredible next to the silver appliances.

Bringing them together.

Citywide Kitchens

For Citywide Kitchen designers Rachael and Peter Hill, they maximised storage for their clients with a double aspect kitchen island that included a dishwasher and kitchen sink alongside deep kitchen drawers on one side with stools on the opposite side.

The island was finished off with bookend storage of glass fronted cupboards to house their clients retro vintage tableware and easy to access wine rack completed in a vibrant blue that reflects the style and personality of their clients.

For any kitchen island it is always important to factor in a power supply. This can either be brought up through the floor if you have floorboards or channelled through the concrete, and is one of those elements that it’s not until you don’t have it that you realise you need it. Include pop up power points for those that don’t like to ‘see’ them.
